Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal Thursday said the government was planning to launch 5th generation (5G) cellular services soon to ensure the fastest connectivity.
However the reality is that it is next to impossible to launch 5G services before 2020, a proposed timeline given by The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance for the commercial launch of 5G globally.
The rosy statement seems to be mere a political one.
The fact is that 5G isn’t even approved as of yet and hasn’t been launched anywhere in the world.
The Minister was further quoted as saying, “The people who already have access to 3G and 4G technology, would be able to benefit from the next advanced mobile network technology after the launch of 5G in near future”.
He was addressing ‘Pakistan StartUp Cup’ competition for young entrepreneurs jointly organized by the United States Embassy and the Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Islamabad.
While we are certain that Mr. Iqbal is well aware of technological advancements, since he is a senior minister and has remained Education Minister for PML(N) in the past, it is unclear why he chose to announce something which is beyond the control of Pakistani government.
Mr. Iqbal is probably not aware that 5G can’t be introduced in Pakistan before next elections — due in 2018 — at least. And his claim of introducing 5G soon only seems like aerial firing.
We have said this before, PML(N) should refrain from announcing fake projects or even worse, repeatedly announcing a single project over and over for months and months. It just hurts their credibility and makes people distrust technology.
